2002 Auto trans. Trans would not shift into 2nd by itself unless engine is reved to REDLINE and then let off the throttle, then it shifts. If I was easy on the throttle it would stay in 2nd, if not it would downshift to 1st.

I pulled the Trans pan and found the "Power wedge" that sits on one end of the band and also the adjuster bolt. It had a chunk broken from the " ball socket ". I purchased a new wedge thinking/hoping that was the problem.

Today I dropped the Valvebody to find part of the band broken. The part that is riveted onto the band.

1. The flat bar on the other side of the band is perfectly flat and straight.

2. Can a new band be installed WITHOUT separating the Trans from the engine?

Engine is stock, trans is stock, I have replaced solenoids in the past.

The wedge fell out last year and after carefull inspection installed it back in place.

The truck has 274800 miles, and I know everything has a serviceable life span, I have never experienced any slipping - overheating or any other problems with the Trans.

I can pick up a new band Monday morning.

Any help with the band replacement WITHOUT removing the Trans would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry but the trans needs to come out and the pump removed. The big decision now would be for a complete rebuild or fix only what is broken, only you can make that decision.

With that many miles on it, I couldn't imagine having only the front band repaired without also doing a complete overhaul. There's no telling what else is waiting to fail.

Good luck,
