was changing my front brake pads on my '99 quad cab. pumped the brakes to have caliper piston contact brake pads. next pump on the brake pedal, line broke, fluid everywhere. is this common??? would like to upgrade to steel braided lines. is this common???

This is not common unless the line was damaged from over size tires, road debris, or perhaps off roading. Where exactly was the failure. How about a picture?

What's the history of the truck? Racing??? Or towing 25,000 pound trailers? How many miles?

Oh, and welcome to the TDR. Fill out your signature so we have a better idea of what your truck is.

JB,

I don't know if it's the same thing that happened to me, but the brake lines on my 1995 truck rusted through.

I discovered this while I was towing a trailer. Fortunately the trailer had good brakes and I had a good trailer brake controller.

Admittedly, my '95 hasn't been parked in a garage for most of its life, but this is the first I've ever heard of a brake line rusting to failure. The stainless steel braided brake lines sound like a good idea to me.

I had the same thing happen to my 99 about three blocks from my shop, i hadn't touched the brakes in months, no heavy towing, maybe a few 120mph to 60 runs on them but nothing special. One more thing to remember is that these trucks have 2 to 3 times more pressue running through the lines do to the hydro boost system.
