Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) front crank seal

My front crank seal does not leak a drop. The truck has 80,000 miles. When I pull my cover to see if my gear case is the improved design (KDP concerns), what are the chances I can reinstall the cover with the original crank seal and not have a leak? Or should I go ahead and order the cover gasket and the crank seal.



PS: Scheid Diesel sent out a flyer in the mail telling they are able to now do the jig fix in-house. It didnt say if this was at all three locations or just Effingham, IL.

done that. The crank seal is teflon (not rubber) I reused it by getting the installation tool that comes with new seals and not breaking it when I reinstalled it. You should get one of these. I reused the cover gasket too, used plenty of cleaner to get the oil out and used DC's grey silicon and no leaks. My timing case had pinched the gasket above the KDP, following WierCummins advice, I cleaned it and worked silicone in there too, no leaks in 10 k miles. I have more time than $ and enjoy working on the well designed Cummins, so I didnt mind if I had to replace the used seals & gaskets.



I had a new seal and gasket on hand just in case.





When you pull the cover off look for a "ring" on the crank just inside where the seal rides. If you dont have one go buy it, it is called an "oil slinger" and it slings oil off the crank and helps take the load off the seal.
