Archived Front crankshaft cover seal

I am in the process of replacing the cover seal and have a spare part that came with the Cummins kit. It is a small black seal that I originally thought was for the oil filler tube. I've pressed the seal into the cover and installed the cover onto the engine as directed by both included Cummins instruction sheet and the shop manual. I have discovered the small black seal is the right size to slip over the front of the crankshaft but it is not addresssed anywhere in the instructions. What is it for and where does it go???

It is a dust seal tha goes on the dampner shaft. The lip faces the engine.

How far do you slide this dust seal on??

Just slip it on flush and install the dampner. It will seat it to the correct depth. Jake
