While changing oil last week I noticed that the rubber boot on my front drive shaft is tattered / shredded. Is this an item for the dealer or is it an easy fix?

i. e. - drop one end of the shaft - pull the shaft apart - slide on new boot - reassemble.

What should I use to relube with?

I'm not sure what the dealer would charge for one, however, it would probably be quite pricey as most of the stuff is (would propably say it's not available seperately - need to buy the whole shaft assembly :-laf ).

Another solution I have used on some of my off-road rigs is to slip a shock or steering stabilizer boot over the shaft and secure it with a couple of tie wraps.

The place that I get my suspension work done at will usually sell them for about $5. 00 or depending on the work they'll throw one in for free (lots of colors to choose from too).

Just a thought :)

I agree with Nick about the moly greases. Polyurea grease would also be a good choice - extremely high corrosion resistance.

I also agree with HP. If the dealer wants more than $10 for a new boot just go to an auto parts store and pick up a shock boot or something that's close and use hose clamps or zip ties.
