Trying to do some preventative maintenance on my truck. Coming up on 150k and took care of most things at 100k except the front driveshaft.

Pulled the driveshaft tonight figuring the u-joints need replacing. Surprised to find they feel and look good. Also discovered there isn't a grease fitting on the rear double cardon joint. I only occasionally use 4wd and very seldom get in any mud or salty roads which I know has helped.

Would you just put the shaft back in as is or would you spend the money to have the joints replaced? While I usually do my own joints, don't really have the time due to work so would probably run me about $250 - $300 including balancing at a driveshaft shop I trust.

read a few posts on what damage happens when it breaks at 70mph.
Then yo will think $300 is cheap.
I did mine like you as a preventive.

When they break they take out transfer case, some transmission wiring, i think some one said it tore up the fuel tank.

Rebuilt it now, no worries for another 150K. Remenber the shaft is spinning all the time, granted not under much of a load.

Thanks.

Since it is already out, might as well have it rebuilt. And like mentioned, it should last another 100k which I won't have to worry about it.

Dropped off the shaft at lunch and was able to pick it back up two hours later. They used NEAPCO u-joints, 2-0799 for the double cardon joint and 2-0795 for the front. Total out the door was only $144. :)
