Howdy Guys!!

I have a 1999 HD 3/4 ton 4wd Laramie Quad Cab Cummins with a 4 in exhaust, edge ez with boost and egt gauges, other than that stock. Bought new and now hav 140000 miles.

One the front driveline where it attaches to the transfer case, was wondering can I buy {for lack of better word} CV joint and just bolt it on or do I have to rebuild it? It has two ujoints in it and I assumed one of those was bad but after removal they appear to be ok but whole assembly is awful stiff and clanks when if 4wd. Is this something that I have to get at the dealer or can I get the assembly elsewhere??

Also I have noticed as of late when my headlights are on they seem to surge, that is flicker bright for ten secs or so then flicker dimmer for ten secs or so, constantly. I did notice before this when I would hit the dimmer switch lights would go out all together briefly!! As far as electical use t his pickup is driven approx 1/2 time with no trailer and other 1/2 with 5horse gneck with running lights on side. Pickup itself has no additional lights or draw since new.

Thanks and sorry for any repeat questions.

It isn't to bad to rebuild the CV joint. As you mentioned it has two u-joints in it that make it work. It is more awkward than hard to rebuild.

As for your lights, what you describe it sounds like the light switch is going bad. We have several of these trucks and have replaced several light switchs. What is strange is that it is always the headlight circuit that goes, the running lights are not effected.

The Front CV joint also has a Ball Joint type joint in it as well. On my truck, that joint broke, and took out the transfer case from the vibration.

The lights flickering, might be because of the grid heaters?

Does the voltmemter move when the lights flicker?
