I have a noise in my 00 dodge cummins 3/4 ton front end when i go into 4 wheel drive. Its a loud ping sound like a u joint out of grease OR BEARINGS MISSING. I brought the truck into the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong which pretty much told me there morons. I took the front driveline out and replaced new u joints. Everything looked good. Same Noise under load. I thought it might be the u joints on the axle but with close inspection they looked good, but i didn't pull the axles out. Can it be in the hubs? Has anyone had this problem? Iv'e been in 4 wheel drive alot and even with this noise nothing has came apart or broke. thanks

Patrick

i have the same problem in my 3500. Would really like to know whats causing the problem. It also seems to lurch or jump pretty bad when turned. My 2500 does not do this at all, unless fully locked in one direction or another.

I also get a vibration, plus a squeaking coming from the passenger side of the front axle when in 4wd, I am wondering if the shifter fork on the disconnect is dry? Mine is a 95 with only 66k on it, so it sat more than it was used for many years. All u-joints are fine and the ones in the steering kunckles spin all the time whether your in 4wd or not. I only get the noise when in 4wd and untill the front axle shifts out once I put the tranfer case back into 2wd. Sometimes the squeak will change pitch as it shifs out, espicaly if I step on the throttle. I plan to pull the CAD shifter as soon as the weather improves. Cheers Mike

Im going to pismo beach next weekend pulling 9000lbs. plus on the beach. If it doesn't break there which i hope it does so i can fix it then i will just deal with the noise till i figure this problem out.

Patrick,

If you have an axle U-joint problem it will probably not make any noise as long as the steering is straight ahead. Try this: Jack the front end up and put it on axle stands. Then with the steering straight ahead rotate the wheels by hand. Then turn the steering hard over and do that again. If you have a bad axle U-joint you should feel a grinding or roughness when the steering is hard over. Check it hard over the other way too.
