For some time I've notice my windshield washer fluid spray has been pretty weak. I was thinking maybe the pump was going bad or plugged screen. Then by chance I happened to raise the hood to check something shortly after running the windshield sprayers and notice water running out from behind the heat insulation panel under the hood. I'm thinking I may have a bad connection or cracked fluid line. Problem now is the insulation panel doesn't look like it's easily removed. The panel is bit rigid so hard to get a good read on what type of plastic fastener is used. I'm thinking its some kind a christmas tree push in fastener. Any tips on removal would be appreciated. I would like to fix this issue but would rather live with a weak spray than sagging heat shield.

I didn't know that. I guess I thought it helps prevent paint damage/fading from engine heat. Maybe a mouse was chewing on the lines.

I noticed the insulation starting to sag on my ‘99. It turns out that 25# of dog food is about all it can support. It was quite the mouse habitat in there. It went in the trash and I drove the pickup for fifteen years after that. No problem with paint.

That hood insulation helps hold that engine heat in. Diesels love to be warm and run their best once they have reached operating temp. Get yourself a trim removal set. Will have a tool in there that goes behind the plastic head and allows you to pry it out. Sometimes you can get a couple in and outs before they won't hold anymore. Maybe pull one out and see if local auto supply has anything that matches up. If not, trip to dealer!

That insulation has little to no effect on engine temperature. It was put there for sound dampening. Many TDR members have removed it with no ill effect on engine performance.

When I was searching for one to install on my 17 5500, I had a hard time finding it... it's listed as hood silencer or hood sound reducer.

There's suggestions of removing it and throwing away... good if that's what you want. I never had mice in mine, but they did like the wiring harness behind the driver's side headlamp on my 02. I'd keep it if no other problems associated with it. Get a plastic fastener removal tool at you auto parts store or Amazon to remove the fasteners... you may be able to reuse them.

Cheers, Ron

The right tool for the right job... Not too costly.

I should just get a set. I’ve seen them at HarborFreight but feel they are over priced for a plastic tool and end up using a screw driver. With more plastic parts on vehicles they probably would be useful.

I got the hood insulation cover off. Used the special tool, but only 1 of the 6 clips are reusable. Plan on just replacing all of them if you decide pulling them out. Found my windshield washer tip problem, broken connection. part of the barb broke off in the connector. Using a screw I was able to get most of it out then ran some fluid to wash out plastic debris. Order replacement spray tips. Not sure how to get the hood tip out as it has good size clip. I will take a look at the replacement to see how it works. May need to break the plastic tip off.

I will give it a shot when the tips come in. The tabs are not easy to get to from under the hood. Need some long 90deg tipped needle nose pliers.

No luck salvaging the spray nozzle. Took a pair of pliers and crunched the bottom half then crunched the spray head and out it came. Replacement pops in easy. Connected the hose and back in business. Replacement head sprays better than the other original head. I was thinking of replacing both but since i would need to break the other off I decided to leave it for now. Below is a link to the parts I bought. The hood tab pack came in 30pack so now have plenty extra for next time. The tab quality aren’t as good as the original ones but connection feels solid.
