Not sure if this is a "911" or just a heads up (move me if needed), but here is the situation. Just took my truck to get the front pads changed for the second time (123,000 miles). Have been noticing a slight dragging and grinding, just got worse in the last couple of days. Pulled front tires and the inside of the rotor is paper thin, already had the edge cracked off in one place about an inch and a half long. Outside of rotor still in good condition, both sides of driver's rotor still good. Did this happen since 1st brake change or should it have been noticed then? Cannot get one until in the morning, probably noon, and I am supposed to leave at 6:00 a. m. with a bus load of kids going to Baton Rouge for our State 4-H contest. Nothing like a little bad timing to ruin your whole week.

Since it was the inside face that got eaten I would guess that the piston froze in the caliper. Usually the outside pad gets eaten if the caliper sticks to the slides so the slides sound OK but the piston may not be returning properly. Either way, you need a new caliper for that side along with a rotor.

I have seen them go bad in one day. There was probably no indication of the problem when the pads were changed last time. Did you notice a difference in the amount of brake dust over time from one side to another? Sometimes that can tip you off to a brake problem before it becomes a metal-to-metal, high-dollar oops.

Good luck.
