I had to make mine for my first gen, but they are available for later trucks. I got mine for my Dmax from warn. Ihave a mulit-mount winch that fits in it. It is awesome for spotting a trailer in a tight place though.
Google "front mounted hitch" and you'll get a lot of places to buy them. I bought mine from e-trailer.com I think. It was a bolt on to the frame. I use it for my bike rack.
I am looking for a front hitch for my 04. 5 and i have found alot of places that sell them but I can't find any pictures of what it looks like. I only will use this hitch to put my TT in my side yard and I don't want to see the entire hitch only the receiver. If anybody has the hitch for me to go with, can you post a picture and what hitch it is.
Hey Rank, I'm in the same boat as you. I have a 34' trailer with a touch over 1100 lbs of tongue weight. I need to only move mine a 20' to get it out of the RV garage but I cant do it with the back hitch. I just picked up a used Drawtite 500 lbs front hitch and have installed it last weekend. This weekend is going to be Dday to see if it's gonna work.
I'm going to take off the propane tanks off the front and fill up the 40gallon water tank that is located all the way in the back and see if thay will help the tongue weight issue.
I'm going to practice with my boat till I get the hang of it and then got for it.
Wow! I have pulled darn near every type of tongue pull trailer including 90' power poles and have never had a problem. The front hitch will make a dork out of you in a heartbeat. I got it out but I finally got frustrated to the point that I gave up and went with the rear hitch and with my wife watching me to make sure I didn't rip the sides off, pulled it out.
Not completely sure what I think about it at the moment... ... ... ...
I've used the front hitch to back my boat in beside my house numerous times. It's about 30 feet with the trailer. The big advantage I think is just being able to see better rather then over your shoulder or in the mirrors. You still have to think about the steering. Turn left to get the back of the trailer to go right. It also seems more responsive to your turning of the steering wheel. Ken
You know, I didn't even try to hook it to the trailer to see how the tongue weight would be but I'm sure it would be fine. I flunked so miserably with the boat trailer that I punted and decided I'd do it the old fashioned way. Took some careful maneuvering but I'm pleased to say it came out unscathed.
My old truck was a crewcab dually and though it wasn't that much longer than this truck, there was no way to pull the trailer out. With this Dodge, the turning radius is much better and I was able to motor it out.
Ken,
You're right on the money about being much more responsive. It's almost too responsive for me!!!
