as some of you know when i did my kdp i installed a new front cover gasket & front seal(which is leaking)

now my teacher made me be sure that the inner lip of the seal was facing inwards, towards the engine.

also a small pick/screwdriver was used to push the lip in, ( probably damaging seal in process) what i see/read from my haynes repair manual is to just put lock-tite on outer ring of seal, and make sure no oil is on crankshaft snout, and to use the plastic seal installer/positioner (which we didn't).

should i just install the seal, like the manual says or purchase sleeve/kit?

sorry for my long windedness.

thanx again,

dt

We have to check our definitions / discriptions here first , the seal should have the metal closed end facing front in the timing cover then put oil on seal and the surface that it contacts also , if you can see rust , a line cut into the balance shaft where the seal rides , that means that you don'nt have a kleen smooth surface for the lip to ride on then put on the speedy sleave or seal saver , the plastic tool - use any thing that is about the same size as the seal to tap the seal in so as to not fold spindle or mutlate it , if the lips and dampner are lubed the you shouldn't need to poke at them at all .

The service manual and the seal kit both say the seal MUST be put on dry. It's teflon and won't seal if there is any oil. I've put on several, all dry, and they have never leaked.

Joe,

While you are here, do you know the size of the O-Ring for the leaky primer button on the lift pumps? Or should I take it off and match it up at Napa?

DieselTorque,

I tried to install the seal without the plastic installation sleeve ( I stepped on it and cracked it  ) and found it impossible. I had to get a new seal and installation sleeve. I didn't use loctite on the seal.
