I bought a front seal from Cummins the other day. Going to be pulling the cover to loctite the bolts since I have the whole top end off right now. I opened up the seal to check it out. There is the seal with the teflon installation guide, the installation tool, and a black ring that looks like part of a seal. The inside has two small lips and the outside has a single tapered lip. My question is, "What is this black piece for?" Is it something I need or is it an extra piece?

Dust seal

Carl,



The black rubber ring you are wondering about is a dust seal. It helps keep the large particles away from the front main seal lip. It installs between the main seal and the front pulley. It just slides over the nose of the crankshaft. It is easy to install.

Let us know how this goes and what you find when you pull the front cover. You and I talked about this last week when I was there and I will be doing the same thing as soon as I get a chance. This week is out as I have to go to Oklahoma but I'll try to do it this weekend if nothing else comes up.



Let me know if you think I could change the seal without pulling the radiator.

You are correct. The lip on it faces out.

It is much easier and quicker to take the extra 20 min to pull the radiator to change the front seal and remove the front cover. Plus with out the radiator in the way you can clean out the intercooler fins real well. And it keeps the #$@% wrench from going throught the radiator when it slips off.

After I posted the above, I got to thinking about the overheating problem I had last year. I used the fleetguard flush but still had some buildup in the radiator. I think I will do what Carl is doing and take the radiator to the shop and have it cleaned out good. (or replace if they want too much for doing the rodding and cleaning)



Might as well take the intercooler out and flush it as well and clean the rest of the sand out of the fins that I couldn't get out last year with the dental pick method!
