I know this gets beat to death but couldnt find a good and answer from my searchs. Most the instructions for pyro mounting show it in the back 3 cylinders of the manifold. I was wondering what the latest and greatest info from the TDR members was, mount pyro front 3 or back 3 of the manifold.

I just want the best reading I can get.

I read that #1 cyl doesn't breath like the rest due to an accessory bolt boss in the manifold. If it gets less air and the same fuel it should run hotter than the others. I plan to mount mine to monitor the front three!

I bought my ATS exhaust Manifold from Piers. It didn’t come pre drilled and tapped for a sensor. Piers said he mounted his in the front because it ran hotter than the back three. So that’s what I did.
 
the back three will do just fine. all your looking to do is get a basic measurment of the exhaust temp, not an exact. the back three are just as good as the front three. i have mine in the back three and it works just fine.
 
The mechanic at Dodge (he is a TDR member) told me he sees more scuffing (if overheated) in #5 and #6 because of the same reason. Since he is a serious Diesel engine and Cummins fanatic ( he owns 2) I believe he knows his stuff.



I assisted someone changing injectors once and the #6 was noticeably warmer then the #1,2,&3 injectors, the mechanic doing the swap said the same thing as the Dodge mechanic.

The difference in temperature was surprising to me.



I was told it has to do with the way the cool water is circulated in the block :confused:
 
i believe what that guy said about #5 & 6. i work on the bigger cummins version. 855 ci engine. there seems to be something about the design of the engine. all the problems we had when we do a engine overhaul we always pull #5 rod bearing. if any are going to bad it will be that one. a guy told me once it has to do with the path of the oil supply to the #5 cylinder. it seems to affect that one more then others. so yea i can beileve what that guy said.
