Front U-joint/constant velocity joint & warranty?

The last few days there has been a faint clicking noise, it sounds like it is coming from the transfer case shift lever. The noise is only heard when coasting either in gear or in neutral at any speed. When I shift into 4 wheel drive the noise is gone. Looking under the truck I noticed that there is about 1/16-1/8" play in the front drive shaft up by the transfer case at the U-joint (constant velocity joint). My first question, is this play normal? If not could this be the cause of the noise? And most important would this still be covered under warranty. The truck was delivered in October of 2002 and now has about 28,000 miles.

I thank all those who reply, Pete

I can't say if the noise you're hearing is normal or not (probably not), but I can say that the components fall under the 7/70 powertrain warranty. You may be expected to pay a $100 deductable, however.

I Just had my front drive shaft replaced. I heard a click or ticking noise before I noticed anything else. This was always in two wheel drive. Next time when the u-joints on the constant velocity ( cardan joint ) are starting to go I will know what it is. 80,000 kms.

Should be covered under the 3/36 warranty, provided of course your DEALER can verify there is indeed a problem.
