I have 2 wdrive 04. 5 2500 going to put breaks on and was thinking of wheel bearings as preventive maintance. (cant breakdown buddies with fords will never let me live it down)wondering about cost and difficulty of install any help please.

There's been some variety on cost. Some on the TDR have bought direct from SKF(?). I've only removed them on 4wd. Can't help with your 2wd.

Installation and removal on a 2WD and a 4WD are the same except for the axle nut used to hold the splined axle to he 4WD unit... .

There is post here about that where I posted a part number and photo... . in the thread above I talk about removing these with a puller...

We've had our out of both 2WD Fords and 4WD Dodges and they rust in the same... with the bearing out... sitting on the bench you can remove the ABS senor with an allen wrench and re-grease the bearing... We've gone so far as to press them part and clean them, grease them and press them back together... .

This bearing assembly is close to $300. 00 on either truck and the only thing I've found from the vendor that I use is the splines in the hub on the 4WD units... .

This is not a job for the average guy, if you have good skills and access to good equipment you can do this ...

WE had one bearing on a 05 that was badly rusted in place and we had to take a Hilti drill hammer for concrete (weighs 60 lbs) and use the chisel tool to force this apart, than 30 minutes of clean up with a stone on a die grinder... . we later grit blasted all surfaces and never seized them up for further work... its like the wheels... when they rust on... just 2 to 3 times as bad... .

I've read 2 threads here about taking the ABS sensor out with the hub in the truck be we never were able to do that... . and of course at the same time we either replaced the ujoints or serviced them on our 4WD units...

BTW - this is the standard of the industry... . if you take other makes, Nissan, Toyota, GM, they all use a hub like this.....
