The left front wheel hub on my 03 is shot. The right front seems fine. At 168k, should I just do both and get it over with?

I just replaced the front shocks (which led to the bad hub discovery). Probably need stabilizer ends but the ball joints and tie rods look/feel ok.

I found a set of hubs from Detroit Axle that seem reasonably priced.

Anything special needed to do this replacement?

Yes, replace both (assuming your truck is 4WD).

There are four bolts that hold the unit bearing hub to the spindle. The hub is pressed onto a tapered surface. Loosen the four bolts about two turns. Insert the right length of extension onto your socket and use your power steering to incrementally press the hub away from the spindle. Continue backing off the bolts and cycling the press until the hub is free.

Using the power steering as a press makes the hub removal much easier and no parts will be damaged. Use anti-seize on the hub surface during reassembly.

Inspect axle shaft u-joints and replace if necessary.

My last hubs were SKF. It's not easy getting grease in that hole. Anyway my left one is shot again. So bad the antilock brake warning light came on. This time I went with Timken. Redoing most of my front end right now as we speak. Ball joints, front driveshaft, rotors, calipers, brake lines, bearings.

Looking at the reviews on Amazon for SKF, Timken, Moog, and Detroit Axle all have a few negative comments (from 2-3 years ago) about early failures and cheap Chinese components. I guess nothing a safe anymore.

Soon we won't be listing out what brands are good, but which Chinese factories are better.

BCA is a subsidiary of NTN (Koyo Bearings JPN)

I did some research a while back on bolt manufacturers and actually in Taiwan (same as China basically?) they have some very good factories. I would still rather buy American made anything, but it's harder and harder to find, and meanwhile I do think some of the overseas quality is way better now.

It's over. We gave it all away for saving a dollar while the federal government has put us 35 trillion in debt. I don't know why we even need to pay taxes when they don't account for what they spend.
It's over. Stick a fork in it. We are gliding into insolvency.

I'm in no way supporting China, but as I've stated before, there are manufacturers in China capable of producing high quality products. There are also manufacturers in the US and elsewhere capable of turning out low quality products. It's all about what someone wants to pay for it.

It all goes back to the three choices, you can only choose two:
  • Good
  • Fast
  • Cheap

YoHoot , Nice shop and hot rods ! That is my kind of shop .....:D:cool:;)

Couple '30-31s and a 49 f1 ?.... and a '0' turn lawn mower?

Taiwan isn't the same as China, They manufacture excellent products in my experience. The TYC brand on Rock Auto has extensive Taiwanese mfg. Tekton Tools as well.

I'm going to go with the SKF hubs as they carry a 5 yr/60000 mile warranty.

Can someone confirm the size of the axle nut? It appears to be 1-11/16" (43mm).

What is the price on those front bearings?

I replaced them on my '99 front bearings many years ago (15-20 years)when I first bought the truck because who ever did the front brakes did not seat the bearing or messed them up. Dont know how long it was run like that

My 05 im thinking of doing the locking hub spindle kit $$$
.

SKF BR930502

amazon and other online places are well known for selling counterfeit parts. unkowingly im sure but that doesnt change the fact.
and we dont know the competancy of the person installing the parts.
thats why i dont spend even a moment reading reviews on stuff like bearing hubs , from questionable sources ,of unknown authenticity.
skf's own website has reports of people supposedly getting counterfeit bearings from rock auto ,amazon ,ebay etc.
authorized distributer is your best bet but people cant resist the 30%-60% cheaper price through unauthorized avenues
