Did anyone watch the PBS show "Frontier House" this week? For those of you that don't know whar it is... .

Three families were chosen to come to Montana and live for 5 months just like a frontier family from 1883 would have, with none of the modern conveniences... they had to build their home, take care of their anmals, plant and harvest their food, etc.

The most disappointing part for me was the fact that they weren't allowed to hunt, due to current day Montana laws,,,,,which is kinda bunk, since they could have gotten a waiver or something from the state..... so it wasn't realistic in that sense, but overall it was an interesting show to watch, I would love to live that way, but I guess I would have to give up my CTD, and get into really good shape :D

I watched a little

I liked the rich guy who was always cheating, and still would not make it through the winter. However it was pretty smart of him to bring a still as his one 20th century allowed item. Sold booze to the rest of them. LOL

yeah, the still was a good idea, he was letting those kids drink that stuff at the dinner table one night and let them smoke pipes too..... surprised he didn't get a rash about that...

WE watched it and had mixed feelings about it. The no hunting rule was unrealistic!

Unfortunately the "rich" family, in my mind, illustrated a lack of integrity which pervades the current times. The rules were made and they knew that going into the situation. But his comments that "it isn't fair" and the handlers did not "prepare them good enough" for the task at hand reminds me of big Goverenment taking care of everyone. However, the children that complained so much in the beginning actually "grew up" in the short time they had to sweat a little and would have liked to continue the project. Their comment at their palatial home in California that they were now bored and there was nothing to do was a refreshing comment. Perhaps they are the true winners of this experiment, at least for this family.

I was impressed with the quality of the shelters constructed within the limited views that I could see. The Boston couple and his father did a great job.

I am sure it was very difficult on the participants as it was a "hard row to hoe;" especially for those that, perhaps, did not have the benefit of a rural background. It appeared to me that the Tennessee woman had been exposed to some rural background experiences.

Basically I think that most people will step up to the task at hand and do the best they can but there are those that will not succeed and that is life. The situation created now cannot compare to a similar situation in the late 1800's. I think the people of that time were more knowledgeable on survival attitudes and attributes that would have prepared them better than this short run project. Their "wants" did not exceed their "needs" very much as a simple life demands. The culture of of today does not provide for that kind of training and in case of a catastrophe there will many people that will not survive.

patriot, they did have to plant and harvest vegatables, so that part was at least partially realistic/

I agree whole heartedly about the kids,,,,every one of them from all of the houses adjusted real well and did very well, and in the end wished they could stay..... which as you said was really refreshing... proves that given the chance, most children would chosse a more outdoor oriented life to a electronic game, TV, world if shown how fulfilling it would be... .

I think it would be good for most of us to go through that experience,,,,,it would be really hard, but I know it would do me good. . ,,,

somebody could make a pretty penny if they set up a place to charge people to come out and live that way for long periods of time. I think people would pay to do that, I would if I had the money and the time to take off to do it... . that would make a nice 3 month vacation every year...

Hey Come On - You are wrecking it. It hasn't been on in Alaska yet. It's kinda like the tape delay thing on the football games.
