I have to do the left side ball joints on my '01. I would like to change the u-joint while I'm in there. Napa and other auto parts shops can't pull up any P#s newer than '98. The ball joints have changed on the late model trucks and the price has at least doubled, it would appear. Had to buy OEM. Have the u-joints changed too?

Hey Tom, I would think the u-joint stayed the same. Maybe you could get some rough measurements from the one in your truck. i would try to measure cap size and from one cap across to the other. That might help you. Get one with a grease fitting. Jeff

I don't believe what I'm seein' w/ these frt. axle u-joints. It has some kind of mushroom shaped cap that is held in place by a c-clip in the INSIDE!!:eek: of the axle yoke. What the bloody blues blazes is going on here?!! Does that mean you have to use OEM because there's no groove for a c-clip for a "normal" u-joint? I'm not sure it's worn out, just thought I'd replace it while doing ball joints. Does it take a special tool to remove the cap? Un-freakin'-believable!!!:confused:

Thanks Jeff,

Threw me for a loop. I've never seen one like this. I hate to buy OEM if I can avoid it.

BTW, Next Sat is the big western county HS football rivalry, so Sun. works best for me.

Sky,

What were you referring me to on the Ingall's site? I didn't see any reference to u-joints, although I find the . 8 hrs to replace a ball joint interesting. :rolleyes: Hope that all mine take.

Tom

Your joints are not anything fancy. The cap is held in by a full circle snap ring. This goes on the cap inside the yoke of the axle shafts. It is a stronger design than the half clips.

As far as a place to get them. I buy my u-joints for my Jeep at a local tractor trailer/diesel repair shop. They are also a Dana supplier. Check for a driveshaft shop, or somebody that is a Dana parts dealer. I think it is a 5-332 joint (might be called a 1480 joint, also). Either way, a Dana parts dealer can get the right one.

5-332

To the best of my knowledge the 5-332 axle joint is not greaseable for strength reason's. If anyone does know if Spicer offers a 1480 series 5-332 axle joint with a grease fitting please share the info... .....

ta,

Thanks for the info u-joint. Unfortunately, the ball joint press I bought doesn't have a big enough "receiver tube" to remove the ball joints and the Snap On guy is trying to track one down w/o having to buy a $90 set. This is in addition to the $125 spent on the press. :{

Spicer 5-332X

The Spicer 5-332X is not a greaseable joint but there are other

joints that are greaseable and I wouldn't worry about the strength. I use Neapco 5-332 u-joints and I have broken 1 1/2"

axles without hurting the u-joint.
