fuek tank capacity

I have a friend that bought a '12 crew cab dually a few months back. Just a couple of days ago he told me the diesel tank only holds 24. 5 gallons of fuel. I told him that it is supposed to hold 35. He said he drove it until the low fuel warning light came on, and it only held 24. 5 gallons. Is there any chance that his truck has a short box fuel tank, instead of one for an 8' bed? He might have a problem with his filler neck, since he has removed the dually box and installed a fabricated welding bed, with the filler neck nested in one of the compartments and not in a fixed position. I will have to look at it closer the next time I see him.

I have ran mine down to near empty and it took 35 gallons.

I can't understand why someone would buy a dually pickup and remove the bed to install a work bed when he could have bought a stronger, tougher cab and chassis platform and simply added a bed. The C&C would have given him stiffer front and rear suspension that doesn't require air bags or other add-on suspension aids, a 52 gallon fuel tank, Aisin transmission, and other features.

If you keep driving it will finally quit telling you how far to empty and just have the gas pump symbol showing, then you will take about 35 G.

One of the first things I do with all my new vehicles is to run them lower and lower on fuel until I get a good idea of the true working capacity and the fuel gauge accuracy. I have run out a couple of times, but if I'm really running it low I make sure I'm doing it with a gas (fuel) can on hand. Once you know the true capacity and range you are good to use the full capacity of the tank as it was designed. On my last truck I always fill up about the same spot on the gauge and it takes 32-33 gallons every time.

On mine, a 2010, when the low fuel light comes on, it is just below a 1/4 tank. Which is about 6-8 gallons left.

Interesting on my 2011. The fuel light usually pops on when the Distance to Empty guage is showing 40 miles to go or so. I usually end up filling up and putting in 30 or 31 gallons.



Is he calling it full the first time the fuel station pump clicks off? if he messed up a vent changing the bed of the truck the foaming could cause this to occur faster.

He has a long bed crew cab. The filler neck is not situated in a favorable location yet, just sort of there. He needs to get that located with some elevation above the tank before he can really utilize the full capacity of the tank. That's the least of his worries right now. More about that later in a new post.
