I think the throw out bearing is bad, how can I tell?

Any way to limit Smarty RPMS?

Can someone tell me what the signs of a bad fuel actuator control are.

And how to check the part to see if it is bad.



I am having a long crank to start and a occasional lope at idle, transfer pump,

CP3 & injectors all check as within specs.



Other than that after it starts the truck runs fine.

I have been told to take it out and shake it, if it rattles a bit then its good.





I've installed two new ones as PM in mine, and neither of them rattled...



Typically the FCA causes a wavering idle... the idle will float up and down at idle. When they get real bad, the truck may not idle at all.

There is no sure fire way to check them short replacement...

The only thing I have read (and never done myself) is that if you disassemble them, the "valve" will have some galling on it and will hinder its travel. I believe the same person used some fine emery cloth and sanded the galling smooth with good results (FCA operated normally). You can search the web for the "FCA mod", which shows how they come apart for modification.

The loping idle is a good indication the FCA may be faulty. The last FCA I bought from Cummins was around $100.

Since you are in the Allentown area, I'll throw this out to you... if you can get over my way sometime next week, I have a known good FCA you could throw on to see if that cures your problem before you buy a new one.

Thanks for the offer, the truck is at Fuel Injection now I am just going to have them put a new one in and see if that fixes the problem.

You have to shake it hard enough to compress the spring that holds the piston shut, then you can hear the piston hitting it's stop. That does not necessarily mean it's good, I have one that you can rattle, and it is TU.



When mine failed, my rail pressure maxed out, piston (fca) stuck open, lots of injector rattle.
 
Fuel Injection just called me, new FCA installed and truck starts fine now.



I was hoping that would be the fix cause the current injectors only have 25,000 mile on them and I don't want to pay the bill again right now.



" edit" The tech said the FCA he took out would not rattle no matter how hard it was shaken.

Thank for the PM I replied but guess I didn't do something right cause it didn't go thru. Then I saw the link you had to use at the bottom to reply which I did not use. Not real familiar with the PM thing your is only the 3rd PM I have received since joining. thanks Again
