Sucking Air

Well the truck just up and quit today. Would not start, not even a sputter. Fortunately it happened at my workshop just before leaving the driveway. Rounded up some help and pushed it back to where I could work on it. First thought was air. Checked for visible leaks, none. Drained some fuel out of filter looking for bad fuel, looked fine. Bled low pressure side of system, immediate cascade of fuel with no air bubbles. At this point I figured fuel system is not it. Looked for power to fuel solenoid, OK. disconnected wires to fuel solenoid and jumped to battery, no click. OK must be it. Pulled out solenoid (lots of fun!) and removed plunger. Replaced and GO MAN GO. So I get to open hood to shut down until I get new one. Maybe I'll rig a cable through dash.

While under there I decided to direct connect the KSB for a test as I've been getting smoky/ stinky starts for awhile. No click either. I can't seem to find just the solenoid part of the KSB assembly yet. Cummins West wants about $247 for the entire assembly (the only option they have) according to Tim. Anybody ever find just the solenoid? Thanks for listening, Bob

Wow J8! I hope that was installed. I just ordered one for about $66. Found out that I should not expect a click from the KSB. That it is a temperature sensitive device that has wax that melts at a set temp. and hardens at a set temp. When the fuel solenoid shows up I'm going to have Audy at Quality Fuel Injection in San Juan Bautista check out the whole pump. I have to put in a plug for this guy because he's on par with Piers, Kondolay, Jannety etc. for having ridiculous amounts of spare time to spend talking with anybody.

Am sure getting a lot of dumbfounded looks when I open the hood to shutdown.

NOMOFO, there is a thermistor (temp switch) up around the intake which controls the KSB, follow the harness for the KSB and fuel sol, and you will find. I have a Cummins manual which goes into good detail expaining the KSB. Quite a complicated valve! I found late last winter that my truck would start very groggily- then smooth out in a snap. Must be the KSB being sluggish.

Thanks both for replies. Hey Wayne, could you post the part # for that manual? I gotta have one. The Dodge service manual will show all parts and wiring diagrams but not always explain in great detail.

I wish I could. It's at my permanant work location. They have me detached to a different shop and not easy to get to right now. If you go to Cummins and ask for the 6BT Shop manual for 1991 certification, you should get the book. It's green and pretty thick. If I fanagle a way to get in there while it's open, I will snag it. We all work the same hours, and I have to travel 20 mins to get there after we all leave @ the same time.
