I have a question to ask about this additive that American Airlines has been treating their MD80's with for a microbial growth that has developed inside on the fuel tanks. We all know that the fuel used in the jets is a diesel so what keeps these microb's from growing in our fuel tank's. They are using a product named KATHON 1. 5 to treat the tanks on a regular basis.
Should'nt we be useing this in our truck's or is this overkill since we replace the fuel on a constant basis.
I bought a truck that sat for 4-5 years. I never checked the fuel, just changed the filter. I started driving it in Febuary, kept quitting. DUH, had water in it! I pulled the tank, it had the nastiest black slime you ever saw in it! Algae! Cleaned it out, blew out the lines, changed the filter, added power service and some biocide. Ran like a top, no more problems!
I think it was because the truck sat with the water in it. The algae started growing in the stagnant water/ fuel.
I had the same problem in the late '70's with my El Camino, Biobor JF solved the problem for me. Fortunately for me I've never had the problem since then, but your right it's a black slimy mess when the bugs get going in there
