I have noticed that the fuel caps are rusting in the racheting mechanism. I believe this rust will find it's way into the fuel tank and cause problems such as siezed lift pumps, clogged filters damaged VP-44 and eventually clogged injectors. I would advise that everyone check your fuel caps for evidence of rust asap. I am going to look into a Stant replacement, hopefully this unit will not rust.

Hope this helps out some members!

I have noticed that when it rains, I see condensation on the inside of my fuel cap. Does anyone else see this? Seems like the cap is supposed to seal right or a ck eng light will come on. The seal is good. Chris

Check engine light will not come on for the Diesel as we do not have Evaporative Emissions Monitor on our trucks. This EEM is only found on gas trucks as required by OBD II.

Some 24 valve owners have reported a check engine light comes on if the cap isn't tightened at least 4 clicks. I wouldn't know, my 12 valves don't show a light even with the cap off and sitting on top of the pump at the gas station while I slosh down the road...

Chris, I don't think the rain is getting past your cap, it's just condensation from the higher humidity when it rains. If you could see inside the tank the whole empty part would be covered with condensation. I noticed that with tractors when I lived on the coast, that's why we always filled them at the end of the day, less air in the tank to condense.

Having achieved "seasoned citized" status and having been a bit absent minded, I have on several occasions forgotten to replace the fuel tank cap on my '01 24 valve and driven around with it hanging ----truck runs fine and, never have had a check engine light??

While installing my ute tray the fuel cap fell to the ground and broke in two, the interior mechanism was fully rusted. Replaced under warranty but I think a replacement might be a better idea.

the internal parts of the fuel cap need to be made of stainless steel, hopefully I replacement cap will be made much better than OEM Mopar !!!

I looked at mine today and did not see any rust? Is the rust under the plastic? If so, is dropping it and breaking it the only way you know you have a rusted fuel cap?

TGreco, Yeah right! They don't modify ANYTHING unless they have to. In less than two years, I am on my third center console bottom as the tabs break opening and closing the lid. I asked about a better design and they say they put the same thing in. I guess it is up to us to make the better mouse trap!! Chris

I just carefully inspected my '01 fuel cap; I find no metal showing at all and no sign of fust . Everything on the cap is plastic or rubber and while the filler neck is metal, there is no sign of rust. My truck is an early '01 (I actually took delivery in Feb. of '00, and has 46K miles. ) I live in rust country on the Oregon Coast.

Fuel Caps

Well I checked a bunch of fuel caps on Chrysler products at the job today and not one had the rusting problem. They were all gasoline vehicles I might add. Took my cap apart and rebuilt it with a GM fuel cap. My cap was loaded with rust. Also went and ordered a new STANT replacement cap from my local and very friendly parts house. I will not be installing the teater cable as this is how I believe the water is entering the fuel cap and causing it to rust out. Hope this helps all who reads it !!! Regards,:D
