What fuel conditioner do you use and what price is it in the quart or pint or gallon? What is the ratio of conditioner to fuel for the final cost. What does it say it does? Improve mileage, lower pour point etc. ? With the fuel costs which one will work the best and do the most for the least $$$

Sincerely, Kevin

I have been using Red Line's 85+ (a. k. a. Diesel Fuel Catalyst, same formula. . now) since 3k mi. in my '98. 5 ISB. I was instructed to use 1 (12 oz. ) bottle for an initial treatment, adding a ratio of 1. 5 oz. per 10 gal. of fuel as a maintenance dosage. 85+ lowers the pour point of the fuel, raises the cetane rating as well as increasing lubricity. I purchase the 85+ directly from Red Line, by the case (qty. 12 per case), 1 or 2 cases at a time thereby getting the fleet discount. I am very satisfied with their product.

I have used "power service" diesel fuel supplement since I bought the truck. 96 oz. will treat 300 gal. of fuel. Cost is $9. 97 at Wal-Mart; more at a truck stop or convenience store. It will help lube the internals of the injection system and absorb incidental amounts of water/condensation in the tank. I'm real pleased with it; don't know if it directly helps milage or performance. But by keeping things clean, both will be kept at optimal levels. The real proof was when I had to change out the faulty fuel guage sending unit in the tank. The tank bottom was perfectly clean - no crud or water or sludge whatsoever!

Been using Cummins Premium Plus additive. About 9 oz per 30 gallons fuel. No complaints.

Hi Oil Man
I have used "Stanadyne Performance Formula" for about 5 years with good results. It lowers pour point, raises cetane rating, combats rust & corrosion and provides lubrication for the injection system. The cost is $60 per case which will treat 720 gallons that figures out to a little over . 08 per gallon. I purchase it from my local Bosch authorized rebuilder. In addition they tell me they have rebuilt VE pumps with over 250,000 miles showing normal wear using this product.

Ditto on the Stanadyne performance formula, it also increase's the cetane level. I mail order it from DIS (disesel injection services) by the case, 6 half gallons delivered is about $93. 00 and this treats 1,440 gallons. 8oz per every 30 gallons of fuel. link to their site at: http://www.dieselpage.com/additive.htm

Buzzard,
What was the price you paid for the Cummins product?

John, What is the price you paid for the Red line product?

Thanks guys keep the good info comming.
Kevin

howdy--have used Cummins Premium (abt $11/quart) and good for 125 gal---have changed to the stuff from Lucas for abt $23/gal (8oz per 25-30gal)
Cummins stuff claims--clean injectors and increase lubricity
Lucas claim--increase lubricity----since I only get FlyingJ or 76 from Jones Feed (both stations pump huge amts of D-fuel, so the injector cleaning shouldn't be a big issue)---had no complaints about either product, but figured the stuff from Lucas more cost effective for my conditions,,Cummins may have been overkill for my purposes---neither one seems to affect mileage, and for injectors that are nice and clean already, neither one will, and neither one claims it---I, for one like a slippery pump #ad
(sorry, couldn't resist) rich

oops! I lied--- the jug of Lucas fuel treatment does claim injector cleaning, as well-- and "should pay for itself in fuel savings alone" ---isn't that what we keep telling our wives for BOMBing dollars??

I also use power servace after a friend suggested it to me. He graduated 2 years ago from Northwestern College in diesel mech, all A's except english. That is a good enough recondmation for me. I also buy it from Wal-Mart.

Another ditto on Stanadyne Performance Formula. Started using it with my GMC 6. 5TD primarily for increased lubricity (sp?).

I use Morey's diesel quench. One quart treats 250 gallons. It runs about 6 or 7 bucks. Pretty much same claims as above, raises cetane level, cleans injectors, yada yada yada. The main reason I use it is for the added lubricity. The low sulfer fuel #ad
that they have now just don't cut it.

Oil Man, I believe I paid $50. (ea. case) for the last two cases of Red Line 85+ I purchased (1 case = qty. 12, 12 oz. bottles).

I started using the Red Line 85+ at 3k mi. ; when my OE injectors were swapped out for the Bosch 275s at 18k mi. , the injectors looked extremely clean. We (NW BOMBers) performed several injector swaps lately with one Rammer using the Red Line 85+ albeit, only semi-recently, the other using no diesel fuel conditioner. The condition of the OE injectors was such, that you could easily tell which one had been using the Red Line product.

Red Line also states that in addition to what I listed in my last post, the 85+ also reduces smoke, prevents rust formation, removes water, conditions seals, and can reduce wear when using low sulpher fuel by 75%. I have had extremely good luck with Red Line products! Their SI-1 (gasoline) "injector" cleaner has saved me NUMEROUS times, especially at home with seasonally used epuipment. All of the Red Line products I have used have always delivered as promised.

Red Line can be reached at: www.redlineoil.com

John, good link!! The Redline oil site was very detailed about the 85+, now to see if their is a dealer within a hundred miles of here. Reagards Pete

You need to go to the TDR links on the opening page of this web sight and then to the section on how to build a high performance cummins and read what this guy has to say about Lucas oil,he recommends it highly.

Thanks for the info guys. I will try and find out which ones give the most benefits with the least amount of $. I have a lot of info off the web sights also and will post the info when I've got it all together.

Sincerely, Kevin

Pete, you can order Red Line products directly from Red Line. I had to start doing this when the local sport car shop (that stocked almost the entire Red Line, product line) went out of business.

Oilman, all- I overheard a conversation between a group of vetran truckers, and they ALL were comparing notes on the low-sulphur fuels they were having to run. Without exception, they all agreed that one-half quart/50 gals of fuel of el cheapo auto-transmission fluid was the answer, at least for lubricity. (red color was not a problem). Anyone have any comments? Thanks-Ron

Frijole,
Auto trans fluid has a high detergent additive that you would think should clean injectors and lube the pump etc. But the other additives in the ATF are harmfull and will leave other harder to clean up carbon and deposits in the combustion area and rings. I would have to advise against this.

Sincerely, Kevin

oilman--I guess I should have mentioned this in my post--THE ONE THING that also was stated by above mentioned group, was that when they did a tear down, there was absolutely no carbon anywhere. Even more astonishing, was there was no need to use a ridge reamer to remove the pistons. The combustion chamber was clean as a whistle. These guys are talking 150 to 200K miles on these rigs without any adverse effects from using transmission fluid as a fuel additive. These old f%#$ must have enough road miles to know what works and what doesn't. Me?, I don't know squat about fuel conditioners, but I was VERY curious about their statements. Kick this around with other "old" truckers and see what kind of response you (all) get. Ron
