I had a pleasant experience the other night at a Dodge dealers monthly seminar. Fullerton Dodge. The distributor was there for PROTEC, a diesel fuel conditioner.
Since mine is an older truck, 93 with 112,000+ miles I volunteered it as a test vehicle. They ren a "before" test, treated the engine. and ran a "after" test-both with an Opacity meter on the exhaust.
Before gave an average reading of 16% of 5 accelerations at heavy throttle. The after reading was 3% and the reduction was also apparent visibly.
The conditioning was interesting. The first test was done when the engine was up to temperature. Then the fuel filter was removed and a new one was filled/primed with the conditioner and reinstalled. The remainder of the conditioner, I believe they used almost 2 cans, was put in the fuel tank. The engine was then started and run for about 15 min. before the second test.
We were told that you could use can like this each time the fuel filter was serviced and occasionally add some to the tank between servicing.
At present they only sell to fleets and dealers so the conditioning could be done as part of a routine service. I'm sure the dealers will sell it separately and I think the price was about $15 for a 375 ml can-don't quote me.
If nothing else, the idea of putting the fuel treatment in the filter seem practical as it gives the pump and injectors a heavy dose of the conditioner before treated fuel even gets to the pump.
This seems like a great product to use just before a smog check, which we all all probably be subjected to some day.
