has anyone installed a fuel cooler on their 24v. i havbe always heard it is a good thing to cool the fuel down for better combustion any truth to that. pros and cons please.

I have a friend that does this with is drag turck (gas). But I would think if cold fuel would be better, there wouldn't be a fuel heater on our ISB's.

no, cold fuel would be good, i have one on the race car, makes a difference. Would be good as well in cooling down the vp44, that was the main reason that i am thinking of putting one on my truck

I think a cooler would be a good idea but first a fuel temp gauge should be installed to see what you're starting out with. I fooled around with my infrared temp gun on the bottom of the tank just once, 15°F day, full tank bottom started out at that temp, after a 120 mile cruise the tank bottom was up to 115°. With those results it stands to reason that the fuel would be at least 200°+ on a 100° day, that sure seems too hot to me.

Learned something new today from a mechanic who knows his stuff. Electric fuel pumps in the tank became commonplace on gassers since the advent of fuel injection. Seems the pumps weren't lasting long outside the tank due to overheating, many were relocated to the tank for cooling. He also said running the tank low on fuel cuts sharply into the life of the pump due to the heat. Maybe something for you 24 valve guys to think about.

I don't belive cooling diesel fuel will yeild the same benifits as cooling gasoline from a performance stand point. If diesel were as volatile as gasoline then it may help. The big question with diesels is how to get enough air into the motor to allow combustion of all of the fuel? If you want better combustion in a diesel you would be better off cooling the inlet air to increase the density.

Will cooling the fuel increase pump life? I'm sure that whoever designed the system took temp into consideration. Maybe not look at all of the lift pump failures!

the fuel heater is a winter time device ...

i was throwing around adding a small coole between the filter and the VP ... still running around with the ground wire twisted together and taped from when my carter HP pump died , middle of march , that that tells you how hi on the priority list the cooler is .

but i would make it easily bypassable to be taken out if you live in an area where it gets cold during the winter .

illflem , the pump in the tank is more for the problem us overvalved guys have been dealing with , electric pumps prefer to push vs pull . the cooling effect of it being in the fuel is a side benifit and i believe not the main reason for its placement ... but what do i know ???:p
