rookie to the game I have an 01 it was cutting out almost like hitting a governer first every so often then it got so bad that I could not drive never had codes, thought is was my lift pump. I replaced it today with an airdog got all hooked up idel ok but still cutting out (like its starving for fuel) when I give any throtle I can put the pedel to the floor and get nothing. new codes after install of airdog 0230 fuel pump relay, 0178 fuel composition sensor low input, and 1689?? where do I start please.

I did some more work bought a code scanner cleared all codes and ran. All codes gone except for 1689 no communication between ecm and injector pump. Engine still running the same any ideas on what to chase ecm or pump.

Well I'm no electronic expert and have a 94 truck but I had an injection pump go out on it and your symptoms sounds similar. Idle's but don't run at speed. I got off thh interstate and had to slowly drive the 100 miles home, it was an erratic but recurring problem on the trip, shut it off and restart ran awhile then recurred. Mine had a ticking sound if I remember correctly, had to play with the throttle all the way. Went to the dealer the next day and got the news. Not sure this is of any help but not too much else here.

The first set of codes you had could have come from a faulty lift pump and/or the new lift pump installation. Nothing to worry about if they don't reappear after being cleared.

But that P1689 DTC that stays... that's bad news.

If you didn't have that P1689 DTC, I'd suggest you test and/or replace the APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor). But with that P1689 DTC, it points to a problem with the VP44 fuel injection pump.

So based on the symptoms and the P1689 DTC, I'd be shopping for a rebuilt VP44 right now.

Sorry!
