Right now I can produce a brief burst of black smoke from the tailpipe when I rapidly depress the gas-pedal—yes, I know, but I’ve called it that for 30 years—when the engine is running at low RPM. This seems like an indication that the fuel delivery system is working well. Is this a way to assess the functionality of the injection and/or lift pump?

If at some point I notice that I don’t get as much smoke--or none at all--in this situation, can I use this simple method to diagnose a problem? I know I won’t be able to pinpoint the problem, but this seems like a way to keep an eye on the fuel delivery system without fuel pressure gauges?

What do you think?

PUFF, if your dead set against or don't wish to spend the $$$ on a FP gauge, I think a better indication will be a stumble. I had one with my truck pre-Mallory, scared the heck out of me.
That being said, I had and did alot of mods. to my truck when my 4" exhaust (BD) went on. I thought I was fairly smoke free, unless under hard acceleration with low boost. The BD came with a turn down tip. I just put a 5" straight tip on and now that it's pointing straight out, rather than down, smoke is a non-issue, that is, I have plenty for everyone. The point is that the smoke was always there, just couldn't see it in the RV mirror with the turn down tip. If you do nothing else, pick up a temporary gauge and check your pre-filter psi's at idle, if you have a concern. Just my $. 002.

Thanks Scott.

I'm in the process of ordering gauges, and I know I should get a fuel gauge, but the fuel guage is just as expensive as the pyro and boost gauge combined.

Just being cheap I guess. If I do put one in, where is the best place to connect it?

unless it just has to match an oil pressure gauge works great and they are way cheaper.

BigSaint,

I ordered the Westech fuel pressure gauge from Geno's, but don't have a clue how I'm going to install it on my 2000. I don't want to connect the 6 oz sending unit on the schrader valve since I'm worried it will break. Has anyone fabricated a hose to remotely mount the fuel pressure sending unit? Anyone know where I can get a 4AN to 1/8 NPT fitting. Part number???

Thanks in advance,
Charles

Puff, check out http://www.xks.com It's a Jaguar place. You should be able to get the whole setup for about a hundred bucks, which includes the gauge and two senders. If you only want one sender, the price will be lower. The part numbers you want are as follows:

Senders SW-82504-F 0-16 psi $27. 62 per
Gauge SW-82868-P (Black) $31. 45 or SW-82888-P (Stainless) $32. 26

Hope this helps
