My 94 stock Dodge (115,000 miles)sometimes will die on a hot day when I'm pulling a hill and the transmission downshifts and the motor revs up. Shortly after that happens the motor starts to miss then dies. After pulling to the side of the road and waiting a couple minutes it always starts right up and acts like nothing happened. I'm wondering if the overflow valve is sticking open or a check valve in the lift pump is sticking open. I've replaced fuel filter, cleaned the screen in the heater and the screen in the fuel tank pickup. Any ideas???
 
Sounds more like electrical problem. The Engine Speed Sensor connector being dirty or having loose or bent pins can cause the engine to die but they(the members who experienced it) never gave and exact descrpition of how it died but the engine always fired up again.

If this is truly a fuel supply problem you should be able to find out by using a fuel pressure guage and check for fuel pressure that is within specs. If there is a problem with the supply side are probably sucking air into the supply line between the tank and the injector pump. There won't be any signs of a fuel leak. The area to check is from the tank to the injector pump. This could include fuel supply lines, lift pump, and the fuel heat/pre-filter. If the return valve is bad the line pressure will be low at highway speed. If there is a bad return line you will most likely see a fuel drip, or a damp place on a fuel hose. The stumbling you are experiencing may well be due to air being sucked into the supply line.

My 95 2500 did the same thing, always happened in hot weather while towing my fiver. It would start missing and just die and like you said let it set for a minute and crank right up . We changed the elbow rubber line to the pump replaced the return fuel line and replaced the screen and checked the fuel pressure and it was low can't remember how low but any way replaced the spring and nut in the 7100 pump and haven't had any more trouble. I rigged me up a fuel pressure gauge ,tapped in the bleed nut on top of the fuel filter and ran the line to a manifold and used antifreeze and water in to the cab to the gauge. It runs around 35-40 lbs. When your fuel filter get blocked the pressure drops . Since I did all that I haven't had any more trouble.
