Got my truck with 120,000 miles on it. lift pump looks old, maybe original. I haven't got my FP gauge yet, so I don't know what the pressure is. I want to use a pump near the tank. Should I get a new cummins lift pump and put it near the tank, and keep the old pump where it is, running them in series? Is that ok? Or do I get a new lift pump, put it near the tank, and bypass the old pump altogether? I've looked at the FASS system, outta my price range. Also, if i remove the lift pump from the stock location how do I hook up the fuel lines directly to the VP44? And what about the wiring to the relocated fuel pump? Any help?

I moved my stock lift pump back by the tank and replaced the entire fuel system with stainless steel hoses. It was expensive but it could be done much cheaper if you did not use the SS hoses.

There are a bunch of threads on how to do it, and a bunch of different set ups. Click this link: Lift pump relocation

The wiring part can be made easy. Go to cummins and order a lift pump pig tail ($8). Cut it in half and splice in enough wire to reach the new location. Make sure to do a good jop of the splicing and such. I reccomend soldiering the connections and covering them with shrink tubing. If you want to switch to a relay setup to power a bigger pump or for peace of mind practial solutions diesel sells a relocation harness.

After that you can remove the pump and put it in the back. DO NOT REMOVE THE STOCK LIFT PUMP BRACKET as it covers a hole in the side of the block. Go to Home Deopt and buy a Deck Joist Bracket that has an L Shape. They are about $3 and are galvanized so they don't rust.

Hooking up the fule lines is covered in other threads many times so I will let you have a look.

Her is a pic of my pump relocated to the rear:

Good luck

If you run them in series, your FP will probably be 30psi or so. Most people get a 7psi Carter pump for the "back by the tank" pump in a pusher setup. This setup will yield around 20psi or so.

Practical Solutions Diesel made me a custom extended harness with 14GA wire. I think the Cummins pigtail harness is 16GA. They use the factory connectors and there are no splices for the ultimate in "waterproofness". This setup is the same as the Cummins pigtail just longer.

However a spliced pigtail or one like mine wont work on a 2000 and up (I think). The connectors are a little different and the pigtails are intended to allow a 98-99 owner to install a revised lift pump for 2000 and up trucks. But Practical Solutions may still be able to help however.
