fuel economy

Made a run to L. A. and back. 1550 miles round trip with just some stuff in the back, no trailer. Most of the time cruise control set at 75 MPH. Averaged 18. 2 MPG. Not too bad.

That's durn good mileage. Musta had that tailgate down. I don't do that well going that fast, probably 17 mpg. I notice once I go over 70, the mileage goes down a bit faster. I got 21 mpg pulling an enclosed trailer with some dirt bikes in it once. The trailer weighed about 1500lbs loaded and I couldn't go over 60 mph the whole way on the 2 lane highway. Guess that helps. Hard to believe a truck this big gets that good of mileage, and can still pull any hill in 6th gear...

My thouugths on the 24 valve getting worse fuel mileage than the 12 valves is the speed limit changed from a national 55 MPH to 65 MPH about the same time the 24 valve engine was put in our trucks. Have not checked with anyone with a 12 valve doing 65 mph instead of 55 to see if they are getting worse mileage. We all know the faster we drive the more fuel it takes and then add a load and that compounds it faster.

My 1st Gen with 3. 54 rear, loaded @8300# every day gets

19-20mpg @ 65-70mph, 23 mpg @ 62 mph, and twice 25mpg

@ 58mph(could have had a tailwind?, its kind of dangerous

trying to verify 58mph around here even on 2 lane roads, you

know, kids on mopeds, and farmers pulling wagons passing

you).



This pickup is very sensitive to rpm/mph in fuel economy, but

I'm sure its pushing a higher drag coefficient number than the

newer trucks are.

The speed limits changed to 65 in the late 80's or early 90's (I'm thinking 80's).

Thats very impressive! I had a 98 ram 4x4 gasser before I dot the dually and I was happy with 11-12 mpg. I hope my diesel "loosens"up a bit and I get good mpg.
