I've seen several different posts where people are saying that the truck stop nozzles are too big for the fuel filler opening on the newer trucks.

I always fill at truck stops and have filled my 2014 at a variety of different ones all over the Midwest and Southwest all the way to California. Where are these big nozzles that don't fit? I never had a problem anywhere I went. They are not a loose fit but they go right in all the way past both flaps with no problem.

Is it just the SRW or the 2500's that have a smaller filler? Doesn't make any sense. I see new RAM's pulling loads in the truck stops all the time.

Ron,

I guess your personal observations support the belief that it's not so much the nozzle size that matters, it's how you use it.

Thanks for the info, I've asked about that I thought that I had seen where that was an issue. Now I know she can handle the big nozzle.

Some truck stop pumps don't work for fueling our rams very well because they are using newer "ultra high flow" fuel dispensers. Although ALL nozzles (there are only two diesel sizes) fit in the truck, the ultra high flow dispense fuel faster than the filler neck can accept and it will constantly shut the nozzle off, even at the lowest speed setting on the nozzle. You can still fuel, you just have to squeeze the handle and hold it manually and shut it off every so often to let the fuel "settle".

I have no idea where it got started that it doesn't work, I'm guessing somebody pulled up to the "big" pump, squeezed the handle all the way and it kept shutting off so they assumed and told everybody you can't do it.

I've put over a million miles on 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gen Rams and I own a truck stop, so I'm pretty experienced in what I'm saying. 90% of the time I can fuel at the big nozzle pumps and set the handle on the first click! which is still at least twice as fast as the regular dispenser.

Car diesel dispensers are limited to about 12 gallons a minute maximum, usually they will run 6-10 gpm. Semi dispensers are typically around 20 gpm real world. The Gilbarco Encore Ultra High Flow (most popular and in my opinion the best, I have them) will flow at 63 gpm maximum, but that is using a satellite as well. Maximum single nozzle flow is 32 gpm.

I'm sure you can see that our fuel necks just aren't capable of accepting the kind of flow that would literally fill our tanks in one minute. But they can work at the "first click" which is usually around 12 gpm.

Cheers!

Powder Extreme, thanks for the info! That makes sense and should put to rest the rumor that truck stop fuel nozzles don't fit the newer trucks.

Glad to hear that my trucks hole is big enough to take any nozzle out there...

Interesting fact some of you may not know... Car diesel nozzles are actually even smaller than unleaded nozzles. There to prevent the unwary from pumping no lead into their Ford. I guess they figure us Ram drivers are smart enough to get the big filler necks. Lol

I've been to a couple of small service stations in my Audi where the owner just used unleaded nozzles for his diesel. Wouldn't fit in my filler neck. Total pain to hold the little flap open with a screwdriver and dribble fuel out of the nozzle enough to get me a couple of gallons to go somewhere else.

I have fueled my RAM at truck stops that I have put 250 gallons into my Peterbilt in the time it takes to wash the windshield! Two nozzles for the Pete, but they are really high flow, and I have never NOT had them work. I do have to use the slowest "click" setting on the nozzle.

I don't believe this is true, at least in NYS. My VW TDI has a special collar (to prevent unleaded pumps from filling) that takes the bigger diesel nozzle (not the high flow, but car diesel pumps) to open it. The unleaded nozzle is not big enough to unlock the collar. It's a real pain when you want to add anti gel or other additives.

Have you tried the filler nozzle that comes with the truck. I use fuel additives as well you never know the quality of the fuel you are buying.
