i have a RAM5500 with a build date of 09/2007. taking the information in issue 64 of TDR mag, i ordered the "new assembly". according to the article the change over date was 12/15/08. when i picked up my vehicle the mechanic asked me why i replaced the existing unit with the "new" unit. turns out my truck already had the revised fuel filter. before you order the up-grade fiter-in-filter check out what your vehicle already has. i threw away $229.

I don't understand. I understood the new assembly was a replaceable filter in a permanent cannister.

I bought one a year ago but have never installed it because I have a large stock of the replaceable filter units to use first.

Harvey according to TDR the old canniter was a different design as shown in issue #64 pg. 50 compared to the revised design for the filter within a filter 10micron to 5 micron. "the difference in the shell prevents the old shell's use with the new dual-element filter. " my truck was built before (sep 07) the date stated as the change-over date 12/15/08. my truck should have had the old filter casing according to the article, so without checking what i had in the truck i ordered the new cannister and filter.

the purpose of the post was just to have folks check out what they actually have, so they don't make the same mistake that i made. When you order something you've bought it, i paid $83 for the unit and the rest in labor. the mechanic was very confused and appologetic said he would make it up to me, it wasn't his fault.

i don't know if mine was a fluke or if the C & C's had a different start date. i tend to think this might be the case, that's why i put this under the C&C's. I know that TDR researches out their tech info before they print.

I guess you are way ahead of me. I either didn't know or have forgotten what I have read about changes. I guess I need to install mine and find out if I have the oldest cannister version or the updated one.

Place an ad in our classifieds and on any of the other sites. You'll get a decent return. Also, you should be able to return it for a 15% restocking fee.

Good idea. My concern was to prevent someone else from making the same mistake
I should have checked my truck first.
