let's try this again. . I posted this earlier but for some reason I can't find the post??? Decided to change the fuel filter tonight and now I can't get the truck started!! I changed the filter about eight other times and this process has never gone par for the course. I followed Fritz's procedure several times and can't get her going. The lift pump runs after I bump the starter but I don't get any fuel to come out of the test port?? I even hiked over to the local gas station and bought some fuel and filled the canister, nothing??

Any help on getting her going would be greatly appreciated as this is my only means of transportaion!

Thanks...

Pete,

I've only changed mine twice (so I'm still a rookie), but I have to really crank it awhile and also give it some pedal when it starts to fire to get it going. Good luck.

dont burn out the starter

Bump the starter without starting to get the lift pump in motion try this a couple of times.

dont crank the starter more than 5 seconds at one time

Thats why I changed my filter this weekend whil changing injectors ;)

Once when we changed the filter on my sons 99 it was hard to start. Filled it with fuel, cycled it several times, bumped starter and still nothing. Had to hold accelerator pedal all the way down before it finally started. Probably got some air in there. Haven't had any problems since. He's got 82000+and changes filter every 10000. Sounds like you got some air in there.

fuel filter

you may be facing the infamous problem--bad lift pump or "transfer pump". if you can get someone to help you, open the schrader valve on the back of the filter and have someone "bump" the starter to cycle the pump. if you do that several times and don't get any fuel through the filter, probably bad transfer pump. hopefully, you'll be able to get it to prime that way.

After about four hours of trying I resorted to Fireman Dave's suggestion and gave her a good crank, a little longer than I like to do but in the end it turned out to be the trick. I'll add longer crank to my list of tricks for the dreaded next filter change:mad:

Thanks for your replys!!:D

Ugh, Long cranking times.....

Don't worry to much about cranking it too much.

WierCummin, Piers, "Hydraulic" Bill K. , Stefan K. , Fast 1, TxDieselKid, Hyde, KWIKKURT, and many others stood around my truck after we changed the injectors. It took 2. 5 hours of cranking to get my motor to start kicking and another 30 miinutes to get the motor to finally run on it's own. (Then another 10 minutes of running to clear all the air out of the injector's and lines)

Final assumption was that the VP44 got a sever case of "Vaporlock" (Not how Bill K. got his nickname) and wasn't pumping Diesel with enough pressure (was just compressing air)

my lift pump was good/is still good with 16PSI of pressure with the motor off post-fuel filter.

KWIKKURT Experianced a similar problem with not having the engine crank back up after running out of fuel.

P. S. I ran both batteries on my truck to "dead" status, and had to get Hyde, and Fast1 to come help me with jumper cables, one truck on each battery.

Thanks again Guys.

Merrick is DAMN lucky they didn't kill his starter

How many injector line were left open? we left 3 loose

Took us only 3 tries to get mine fired up :)

My truck definatly starts slower now. It doesn't have the same "kick" it used to,, still starts, just starts more like a BIG big Rig now,, sounds cool :D

We cranked for 15 seconds with ~2minute breaks

Sometimes we'd crank 15Seconds, pause 5 seconds then crank again.

at one point we had five lines cracked open.

I'm very fuzzy on the details,as I was not really under the hood. (I was Cranking the truck)

Maybe WierCummin can jump in and say any interesting details. .
