Time to change the fuel filter on my 05 CTD and was wondering how to do it. Does the lid just screw off the top of the filter canister? I want to know what I am doing before I wind up breaking something. thanks for any help.

Should be like my 2004. 5. First drain the filter housing using the water seperator valve and Screw the top lid off. The old filter will cling to the top which is held in place by finger clamps. Pull the old filter off the top and place the new filter in its place. Watch the filter end. One end is solid and one open. Screw the top on the housing and bleed the air per your manual.

I turned the ignition on and cranked the engine for a couple of seconds and the engine started and ran for a few seconds and died. Turn the ignition off and back on. Do not try to start. You can hear the fuel pump filling the filter housing and fuel lines. After 30 seconds try the starter. Should start and after running rough for a few seconds should be running OK

Next time I will not energize starter until the ignition switch is on and the filter is full (30 seconds).

Two more things.

1. Don't forget to replace the O-ring. There should be a new one in the filter box. Lubricate it with the diesel fuel you drained from the housing. (You did catch it, didn't you?)

2. Be sure to close the drain valve before turning on the ignition switch. Don't ask how I know this. That little lift pump moves a lot of fuel. :(

Also, if you just turn the key "on", the lift pump only runs a couple of seconds. Bump the starter and it will run 20-30 seconds.
