Fuel Filter Change now loud pump noise in dash area

Had a FASS HPFP 95 fuel pump installed a while back, instead of the $600 intank fuel pump replacement recommended by Dodge for my 04 with the non-op fuel filter mounted pump.



Just changed my stock fuel filter for the first time since HPFP install, but now I have a loud pump (fast buzzing) noise in firewall area of dash where fuel filter mounts on opposite side. It cycles on for 10 sec and off for 5 sec, if engine is running, or ignition key is just on.



I think I have air in the fuel filter or (?). Engine starts and runs nicely, but new noise needs to go.



UPDATE 11:24AM - Just traced noise to the vacuum(?) pump mounted under the passenger side hood mount. There is a skinny black plastic tube going across the firewall and by the area of the fuel filter on its way to the driver side battery area. Did I break something connected to this vacuum line causing ti to leak down?

The electric vacuum pump and the plastic vacuum line provides the vacuum to operate the cruise control servo. You may have created a leak in the line or the servo is leaking. Does the cruise control still operate?



The only time I hear the vacuum pump running is after I turn the key on and before I start the engine after the truck has been parked for a while. I suppose it may cycle off and on occasionally maintaining vacuum while driving with the cruise control on.

Thanks Bill. Yes it was a vac leak. I found a worn plastic tube in front of the fuel filter housing. It had been rubbing on a metal tube for a while and wore through finally. I imagine my fiddling around near it moved it from its normal snug/worn fit to the metal tube causing a constant leak. Fixed with a piece of elect tape temporarily.

What a relief it isn't a fuel priming issue.

You can cut out the worn spot on the plastic line and splice it with a piece of rubber vacuum hose. I haven't had to replace the plastic tubing, but I imagine the plastic air line used on heavy trucks will suffice. You can get it at any heavy truck dealer or a parts house that specializes in heavy trucks. They stock it in a big roll. You can tell them how much you want and they will cut off what you need. It's usually sold by the foot.
