I'm sure this has been covered many times, but I have to ask. When changing my fuel filter (2002 CTD), why can't I just remove the old filter and put in a new one? With the price of fuel these days, every precious drop counts.

thanks in advance

I am just wondering here; I haven't changed the fuel filter on my truck yet and have searched but haven't found the steps to change it? Could you all just list the basic steps to change it out, thanks just trying to do it right without problems. John.

Catch that liquid gold in a fuel can! There's a drain tube off the filter canister. Drain your fuel. Unscrew the top of the filter canister, BE CAREFUL! It's plastic. Clean out the canister, put your new filter in (Don't forget the new O-ring!) Screw the lid back on, BE CAREFUL! It's plastic. It will cross thread easily. Put some cheesecloth over the fuel can spout and put your fuel back in the tank.

Turn on the truck and bump the starter. Don't start it! The fuel lift pump will cycle for 25 to 30 seconds (It SHOULD, good luck) and fill the fuel canister with fuel.

Start 'er up.

If it don't start, there is air in the fuel lines. Take a 19mm wrench and crack open the gold nut on the fuel injector line at the valve cover. Just do the ones you can reach, numbers 2, 3 and 5, I think.

Start 'er up. Now run back and tighten those lines back down!

Easy Squeezy :-laf

If it don't cycle and fill with fuel, you have lift pump issues and , uhhh... .

... . welcome to the club.

I have removed the cover carefully-with the proper 6 point socket I got a Pep Boys. Lifted the cover carefully and changed the filter. Left the fuel in the case unless i spotted dirt.

Reassembelled, ran the pump for 2 29sec cycles and started with no problems. . Minimal fuel lost.

Ditch that plastic cover and call Genos for thier billet aluminum filter cap. This thing is sweet and heavy, it also has a port on top for the installation of a fuel pressure guage.

If after bumping the starter a couple of times, hold the throttle wide open and crank the engine - it should start in a few seconds (it will sound like crap when it does start). If not, then crack the injector lines and bleed them.
