Fuel filter changing

On the models with a vacuum booster if you take the nuts off the master cylinder that hold it to the booster & pull out enough to clear you can lay the master off toward the fender panel. This gives you a lot better access to the fuel filter.

No vaccum booster. Access looks to be easy. Just hope it goes as easy as it looks.

Just cycle the key a few times... . about 10 seconds on, the off... ..... repeat. Mine fired right up after 3 cycles... ... very easy job.

I think what you're saying is to just turn the key to the run position without turning over the starter, right? I don't think we need to bump the starter on the '01s because the pump primes up while you're waiting for the wait to start light to go off. At least that's what I think I'm hearing when I turn my key. Is that correct? I haven't done my first fuel filter change yet.

Dave,

Yes... . you are correct. Turning the key to the 'ON' position will activate the lift pump without having to 'bump' the starter. Leave the key in the on position for appox. 10-15 seconds..... repeat as often as you want. I cycled the key 3 times... ... fired right up without a hitch.

I am getting close to a fuel filter change and my very first one. I had a mechanic tell me to wait til summer because they are very hard to start after a fuel filter change. Is this true? Can anyone give me some tips or recomendations of what to do. This is my first diesel and don't want to take it back to dealer because they wanted to put oil for a gas engine in it so it looks like they don't know how to work on them.

I don't know the specifics of changing the filter on an '01, I have a 99. They are no harder to start in the winter than they are in the summer if the engine is warm, and there is nothing to burn yourself on around the fuel filter. Someone will give you the specifics and you can do it when you want.

It's not that difficult to do. Toughest part is getting the new filter primed and that varies with model. Once you replace the filter (if your's is a 1997(?) or newer) just bump the starter but don't start the engine to let the lift pump fill the filter canister. Could take more than once to fill. Check for leaks and your good to go.

Its a 2001. I didn't think it would be as bad as he was saying but I haven't talked to anyone else that has done it. Maybe he forgot to prime tthe filter. Could I fill the canister before I screw on the top by pouring in some fuel?

My advice would be to bump the starter MANY times (mine took 10) before you actually try to start for real. Continue to bump until the fuel pump no longer pumps. You have some fuel above the filter and if you use it up before the bowl is full, it'll take longer to acually start.

It's not a good idea to prime the filter by filling it up because you have unfiltered fuel going thru the injector pump afterwards.

On my 97, I just change the filter, & prime using the button on the lift pump. Just keep pumping until you hear fuel circulating through the lines. Makes life a lot easier on your starter, & I think that's what the priming knob is for anyway.
