I received my fuel filters from Geno's the other day and started looking at them.

I understand there was a change in the part numbers but, did this change physically change the filter's design.

There is a definite difference in the old to the new. The new has a different "tophat" on the cartridge and the element is narrower. I haven't pulled the old one off the truck yet but I'm remembering the bottom center of the element, where it fits around the center stem of the canister, was lower. The new element's lower center structure is right up near the top of the filter's inner section.

The part number provided on the invoice states FS19528, which superseded FS19598, according to Geno's catalog.

Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to change and I find out I whoops and assumed everything was correct.

Thanks in advance.

I picked up one at Cummins the other day and the parts guys explained that they had changed the design on the filter.

All the rubber o-rings are already installed so that that's one less thing to mess with. Also, the center o-ring has been incorporated into the center of the new filter. That replaces the o-ring that slips over the center rod.

Leaks

I put a new style filter in a 99 the other day and left the o-ring off of the tube and it leaked fuel past the stud and nut on top. Took it of and reinstalled the o-ring and the leak stopped. I would keep using the upper o-ring on the shaft just to be safe. :D

FYI - Doesn't affect '00 & up.

Ps. They love updating and superceeding... getting to where a fella can't keep spare on hand w/o worrying about stock piling obsolete #'s.

Well where are all the fueling experts?

What is the difference between these two filters, why the design change?

Do I need to reuse the old filter's "O" ring?

Man I hate this updating cr--

Why can't they leave well enough alone... ... ...

Clarification on FS19598 and O-Rings

Let's provide some background information and quick update on this issue.

FS19528 has been superseded by Fleetguard with FS19598. This product update occurred approximately 4 months ago. The main reason for the change was that Fleetguard now makes the filter element. Previously, the kit was purchased by Fleetguard from an outside vendor.

You will note with the new FS19598 there are no rubber o-rings, gaskets, or seals loose inside the package. The rubber seal, as well as gasket, are already pre-installed on the filter element. The small o-ring that would be installed on the center shaft of the fuel filter housing is no longer a part of the filter kit. This o-ring should be inspected for damage and replaced only if necessary. It is acceptable to reuse this o-ring. Also, the plastic filter ends were brown on the FS19528. The plastic is now black, and the diameter of the filter media is slightly smaller.

Thanks to customer input, Fleetguard - in future product runs - is strongly considering including this loose o-ring into the package. Definition of strongly considering? We'll let you know when we see the product with the o-ring included hit the shelf.

Until then, visually inspect and reuse the o-ring or replace if damaged.
