Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) fuel filter lid o-ring

Sorry for the stupid question but what do u use to lubricate the fuel filter lid o-ring when you install a new filter. I've been using diesel just so the o-ring does not bind up when the lid turns but it has occured to me that there is probably a better way. Any idea?

Your doing it right, just dab your finger in diesel and run it around the ring... ... ..... good to go.
