with the new fuel filters coming from
Geno's there is no O ring for the center shaft like the old filters. can
I get these somewhere or will a generic O ring work ? thanks for the help.

They posted on here a couple of weeks ago about this - Fleetguard stopped putting the o-ring in the kit and you're supposed to reuse the old one unless somethings wrong with it. They are supposed to start including the O-ring again in the near future because of complaints about it.

The canister stem seal is premounted to the filter element same as the other seals. It also rides higher on the stem than the old o-ring so it shouldn't cause any problems.

Funny, no one is complaining the price for the new filter element is around $5. 00 less than the old element.

I was told by the Cumins guy that there is a seal inside the new filter and the o-ring isn't needed. However, I have noticed the holddown boly on my filter housing is a little damp. I'm guessing that littel seal isn't doing it's job very well.

I might put an extra o-ring in there just to see.

Then he's wrong gitch. Straight from Fleetguard they stopped including the o-ring that went on the center stud because 99% of the time it can be reused. But so many people are thinking that it's no longer necessary because they aren't including it that they are planning on including it again.

I sure hope they start including it again. I've only replaced one... the original when I hit 15,000 miles on my '01. Since i had never replaced one before, I asumed that I had the right replacement filter. Well, I took the old one out, and guess what... I had the older style filter. OK, I decide to put the old one back in so I can head to the store and the O-ring was swelled and I couldn't get it back in for the life of me. Everytime I started to get it tight enough, it would sneak out from between the filter housing and the lid. After the third attempt, the O-ring ripped.

Since I had no choice (my wife just left for work), I called my Chevy owning father-in-law and asked him to drive me to the store. The Cummins shop is about 40 minutes away so I felt bad having him drive me there in such short notice. I ended up going to the stealer... Well, $49 later!!!!!! I had a $15 Fleetguard filter. After the first time around, I sure do like the idea of a nice tight new o-ring.
