I've decided to change the fuel filter myself this time. Seems easy enough. WHat size wrench do I need to open the top of the canister??? DOes the filter just slip out and the new one slip in and tighten back down correct?

I heard all I need to do is bump the starter a couple times before turning it over. Any ideas appreciated. Oo.

I haven't done one on that yr. & md. but take all the lose parts and put them into a container and seperate them in clean diesel or gas before reasembly, then I do beleave that with your truck it has an electric fuel pump and it may come on in the igntion posistion, to check have someone turn key to on and you ,down by the tank listen for the sound of the pump running, if not then bump the start position and listen, once you hear the pump then cycle it 3-5 times and then try to start, some of the older ones like mine have a manual priming pump on the block conected to the filter, I am not sure about yours,

It's very easy to do, all you will need is an 1 1/8" socket or end wrench. Just loosen the black cap and do it. The filter will come out with the cap, just snap the new filter on and lube the o-ring with some oil.

Oh also be sure to drain the canister first.

Like he said it's way easy. Drain the canister by moving that yellow notch to the right i believe. It will only go one way. Pull the cap off and the filter will be snapped in it. Just pull it out and snap the new one in. Move the yellow notch back to where it was and screw the cap back on. Now when i did mine i turned my key to the on position for 5 sec then turned it to the off position for 5 sec then i did that step one more time and started it up. This allows the electric fuel pump to fill the canister back up for the most part. It started for a couple of seconds and then it shut off. I started it again and it stayed started. Simple as that. I do it on my 05.

Is it normal for the truck to die and then need to be restarted?

That's never happened when I change them.

Roper just make sure you bump the starter a few time and it will start fine, unless you have dying lift pump.

Also be sure to check for leaks when you get it all buttoned up. :D

all i know is that both mine and my brothers trucks, an 05 and an 03, both shut off the first time and then stay started the second time. And thats with me doing what i said above in my last message. 5 sec 5 sec then repeat.

You dont just turn the key to on you need to bump the starter to run the pump longer. I do it two to three times then start the truck.

Roper-

As mentioned you've got to "bump" the starter. This will cause the lift pump to turn on for a full 30 seconds. When I had a stock LP I used to do this procedure twice before starting the truck. That's way overkill, but overkill's in my nature.

Also, I will warn you that the filter seals around a central shaft (the outer part of the filter is the dirty side, the inner part is the clean side). Since it's a fairly tight rubber seal, you have to pull with about 5-10 lb force to get it to slide up off the shaft. THIS IS NORMAL!

Place a small amount of fresh engine oil on the o-ring that comes with the new filter. You might also consider placing a little engine oil or some diesel fuel around the rubber seal at the bottom of the filter (the one that goes around the central shaft), although that's not strictly necessary.

I'd recommend resisting the temptation to wipe out the filter cansiter - too easy to get some lint or something on the clean side of the filter.

This is great info for us green guys!

Question; as mentioned with the opened drain valve, must I leave the valve open the whole time I`m changing out the filter? Close it after the new filter is screwed in, when do I close it and how tight on the nylon/plastic cap?

No. Open valve until no more fuel comes out, close valve, open canister, replace filter. Tighten canister back down to "snug".

In military aviation we use "Petrolatum Technical (PET)" (Vaseline) on ALL fuel component packings, the fuel doesnt dissolve the PET, but it seals the packing very well. I have pulled fuel cells, and fuel pumps that have been installed in helicopters for years, and there is still a film of PET on the packings. I did this on my fuel filter on my '00 and on my '05 every time I change the filter. Same as wiping some oil on the packing on your oil filter... you are not scooping the stuff on, just an even, thin coat should do the trick.

Thats my $. 10 worth.

I gotta ask this.

With fuel filtration so important, why doesn't the owners manual make a big deal out of it and show you how? That's ridiculous.
