Fuel filter warning in EVIC

Had something interesting happen. Last month I was at 5% left on my fuel filters according to the EVIC. I had a trip from GA to Phx and figured I'd replace it when I got back. I didn't want to risk a fuel leak right before my trip. Anyway, at some point during my trip the EVIC jumped up to 50% life left, with ~1500 gallons used and ~22,000 miles on the truck. Anyone heard of this? I would have assumed the only way for this to go back up is to hit the reset and have it go back to 100%.

EVIC is not the final say. Because i like to preserve my warranty, i would not go over 15k on a filter. I have been changing them at 8500-10,000 mi intervals. If you can't do it yourself because of time, have a dealer do it

Yeah, I'll be doing them this weekend. Mileage caught up with me due to putting on 5k miles within a 12 day period. Still curious though why the filter life went back up to 50%. When that happened it had crossed my mind that maybe the system determines filter life based on how much flow can get through the filters.

Found another thread that said the fuel filter minder in the EVIC "always gets screwed up when the truck is flashed". Well during my trim my electric seat wire apparently shorted out, and somewhere in Texas I went to the dealer to get it fixed mid-trip...and they installed some updates at the same time. If this is the case, that would explain why this was off. Anyone else heard of that happening?

Every time my truck is flashed. Just had it happen week before last. I was at 75% and had some updates done. Went to 15%. I even had the dealer change the oil and they did not reset the minder. Did it myself only to have it go off track with another flash. Ignore it and go by mileage. Same with oil.

Curiously the oil one was unaffected. I changed the oil the first time at 7,000 (figured I'd change the oil early since it was new). Then right at about 22k (during the trip back), it said it was time to change it. Oh well. Went a bit over this time on the fuel filter. I'll replace them this weekend. Not going to worry about it with the dual filter setup. I also only buy from the highest volume diesel stations, and as a result over the past years (prior trucks), my filters are always clean at the usual regular intervals.

I have had a couple of updates done that changed the fuel filter counter as well, and never messed with the oil usage. I just kept track of the miles that were on there already and reset the counter.

Well I have the drop in fuel filter life. Coming home tonight I checked the oil life and the fuel filter life and it said 3% life left on FF life. Only have 5755 miles and 392 Gal of fuel since last fuel filter change. Just had the truck in on 1/11/2016 for a MIL light they took care of the error code and did a TSB 18-045-15 REV.A I know I had 40 to 50 % left before this service call. What should I do change them or wait a while longer.

If you take it back to the dealer, they will just reset the counter. Just keep track of the miles driven before you or the dealer resets it. I would just reset it, which is what I did. Mine went from about 75% to 5% after some update.

...also, when all else fails, just change the fuel filter at 15k miles from the last time you changed it. With the dual filter setup the new trucks have, I'd never worry about going at least 15k miles on a set of filters (anything short of having a fuel gel issue from temps or something non-typical like that).

My thought is, with dual filters, I go 15K one way or the other. Since its been re flashed, I get better mileage between filter changes anyhow. I hold out to 15K.

I have been changing at 10K intervals. When traveling with my 5th wheel I have to stop at the truck stops, and it always says 5-20% bio. Stupid that they can't tell us exactly how much biodiesel is in there. Sure does cost a lot to have them replaced. I can't do it myself.

Unfortunate you can't do it yourself. I really wish they could/should make some of these things a little easier to do. Shouldn't need a swivel socket and a long reach for something that needs to be changed so frequently. Could also provide a drain hose which doesn't dump fuel all over the axle housing. Oil filter is even worse. Disappointed my 4th gen is more difficult to reach than my 2nd. They could do some sort of remote filter setup which is easier to get to.
