I have an 01. 5 that I bought new. I have been buying Fleetguard oil and fuel filters from cummins NW. Recently I ordered a filter maintenance kit from Geno's. I went to install the fuel filter and found that it is different than the one I pulled out. The one I took out has a hole in the top for the protusion on the under side of the lid to fit into, the one from Geno's is flat on top with no hole. I went to my local Dodge dealer and bought the "right" filter for the truck, it's the same filter as the one I got from Geno's. When I tried to instlall it I couldn't get the lid threads started, the filter seems to be holding it up too high. Am I missing something obvious here? Wouldn't be the first time!

If the filter is a Fleetguard FS19579 the filter snaps on the top of the cover with the hole on the bottom but the filter has to be installed on the cap. At least that is the way my 02 fits. Hope this helps. Never had any problem changing mine.

The filter is snapped into the lid. According to Geno's website the Fleetguard p/n FS19579 has been replaced by FS19855.

Thanks,

I experienced the same problem on my last filter change... the problem was the end of the fuel filter pulled away from the element and remained stuck in the filter canister cap. New element fit fine after I popped out the element end.

Thank you Stevem, that is exactly what happened. The filter top that came off was black looked like part of the lid.
