how do you know when you have a clogged or bad fuel filter. what is it suppose to look like ? reason why i ask is truck was running like crap, no balls off the line, big time loss of power and mpg. , thought i was having turbo problems-. pulled filter, looked normal-black with some white pleating, ( filter had about 5500 miles on it, and allways looks the same ) - filled canister with power systems, installed new filter- only because old o-ring wouldnt seal properly-took it down the road , drove it like i stole it, and what a difference. truck is an 05

Because you're posting in the third gen section I'll assume you're a CR injection. One way to tell is to install a fuel pressure gauge. A stock lift pump pushes between 8-10 lbs. I put a 2 micron fileter between the stock filter and CP3 and see 9 lbs at idle and 8 running down the road at 70/75. I figure when I hit lower than 6 lbs it's time to change them both (or once a year).

Sure sounds like water in fuel to me. Draining the filter housing would eliminate the water. Clogged filters have not been common for newer trucks, though ULSD has created some problems for older trucks that have burned the traditional fuel for a long time and swithchd to ULSD. Mine are always grey/black when I change them. The little warning light for water is not very obvious. Let us know if it starts acting up again. The new in-tank lift pump recirculates quite bit of the fuel, and stirs it up a lot, so water gets dispersed in the fuel instead of settling out in the tank. It can take a while to collect enough in the filter to get the warning light or affect performance.

the water in fuel light was not on, i think it was partially clogged injector. but had no rough idle. i'm hoping the ps cleaned it out for good.

Where do you get your diesel? If it's an old station with old tanks maybe you are getting water, maybe sand. Some stations don't turn there diesel over fast enough and the tank is allowed to pick up condensation.
