I am very new to TDR and I appreciate your responses. I just bought my 97 3500 5spd 4. 10 and I love it - love the smell and the noise. I have read that some of you seem to change your fuel filters fairly routinely. I thought this had to be done the by a professional because of the bleeding line issue. I would like to start doing some of the routine maintenance myself. Can you all give me some guidance on this subject i. e. brand of fuel filter that you would recommend and sources and changing. Any other ideas?

Thanks
frank

I have 15000 on my 99 2500 and I changed the fuel filter today without any trouble. Issue 25 of the TDR has a step by step instructions with pictures. Some time ago there where some posts that changing the fuel fiter was a pain. I found it pretty easy. I made sure the filter was pre filled before installing it and I removed the air bleeder screw and filled it the rest of the way.
I drain fuel into a Pepsi bottle about every two weeks and check for water.
Another thing I do is buy fuel where they move alot of fuel.
Hope this helps

It's not as tough as some have made it sound. Read issue 25 of the TDR and you will have it mastered in 1/2 hour. Only mistake I made was accidentally moving the drain lever to drain while placing the primed cannister in position for final hookup.

Its not that bad. Just drain the filter pot using that little yellow lever on the top front of the filter. Take off the center hold down nut and remove the the whole thing from the top or the bottom of your truck. If you do take it out from the top, be careful not to bend any of your cables.
I clean everything up and put the new filter in the filter container. (Don't forget to coat orings with diesel) I Bolt it back up dry. Then I loosen the fiting off the top to bleed the air off and use the manual fuel pump to fill it all up with fuel. Then I tighen it up. It works very well, besides have you ever heard the statement, "if you don't use it, you'll loose it". At least I know my manual fuel pump works.

Hope this helps
GO FOR IT!!!

Hey, IV-guy----the P. I. T. A. factor is not the filter, canister, draining, bleeding, or o-ring placement---If your 97 is like my co-worker's truck, it's cakeage--if like mine, the P. I. T. A. coeffiecient is approximately the same as mc-squared----the difference?? brake-line tubing--Kurt's was simple, and left a big arm-reach tunnel underneath the master cylinder and above the few things that are fender-mounted. Mine is a bird-cage with no passage wide enough for canister extraction-- the dis/re-assembly of my unit all took place on the framerail of the truck... I did it 3 times that way, and @ 41k shelled out the 180 bucks for a Primeloc. no more muss/fuss. the best filters (did you hear the sound of a can of worms being opened?) come from Cummins's Fleetgard subsidiary, whether you want to stay "stock" or mildly "b. o. m. b. ed"---yellow pages under heavy duty truck (or words to that effect), or if you're lucky, white pages under Cummins. ---Except for my K&N air filter, and shopshelf generic auto trans filter, I use Fleetgard. ---happy clattering--rich

as far as i can tell I have bought My fuel filters from GENO'S and haven't had any problems. Sounds funny I prime My cannister with a cooking baster,no mess with fuel running all over the place.

Well so happens I just replaced my fuel filter for the first time yesterday(12,000 miles). Nothing to replacing it. I slid bucket under vehicle, directed drain hose into bucket and didn't spill a drop.
Now for my mistake. I didn't fill filter with fuel. First time I turned key on I started engine. Started right up and ran for about 2 seconds. About 1 1/2 hours later and reading service manual had it running again. Had to loosen banjo fitting on pump to bleed. Started right up after that. Moral: fill canister with fuel.
