Fuel gauge for nephew.

MY Nephew who promises that if we can solve this problem he will re-join tdr. His fuel gauge is very sporadic . If it is full it is fine but when it gets about 1/2 full it shows empty. But not all the time. I'm an old guy and I have no answer. Help! Thanks Brett.

I would suspect the tank sending unit is bad. There is a float simular to a toilet valve that travels up and down according to the fuel level. It has a contact that slides on a coil of resistance wire which intern sets the guage needle to where the fuel level is.
