Ok, the fuel gauge in my '97 3500 works when it is full until about 3/4 of a tank then it drops the whole way down to nothing with the low fuel light on. What does this mean?

The sending unit on the tank is toast! It is a very common problem. Mine has been dead for about 40,000 miles now, I just run between 4-500 miles and then fill up.

Ditto. I have 3 Dodge pickups, two diesels and a gasser. All three have had this problem. I have replaced all three one time, and so far so good. If they go again, I will go by the miles as well to know when to fill up.

Just another testament to DC's idea of customer satisfaction. They know the problem is theirs, not ours. They should fix it every time, reguardless of the miles on the vehicle. I had an "85 F**D pickup that the paint went bad on 3 years after the truck was out of coverage and they put a full paint job on it at no cost to me. They new it was bad paint from the get-go and had no problem making it right.

Go down to Wiring, switch and guage related and click on either of fuel sending unit posts, if you want to fix it yourself.

I just went through this and it cost me a 1" cotter pin :D, and about 3 hours :(

The sending level arm gets loose on the sending unit thingamajigi and needs to be held on tight, probably.

While you're there add the extra 2' of rubber lines as the next tank drop will be a breeze and do tar up the 2 metal lines comming out of the sending unit as they will rust and leak (reason I had to drop the tank first - Second time is cause I musta banged the sending unit and did not test it before mounting the tank back up and loosened that thingamajigi).

Oh, ya, one suggestion is to hold the level arm with a push on washer. You can also push on the "0" end of a 1" cotter pin against a slim plastic/neopreem washer - fits perfect.

I too called Chrysler for help with the fuel gauge and since I didn't buy it new, they obviously didn't consider me to be one of their customers... ... which, by the way has driven me to believe I should NEVER be one of their customers. They know they have a problem and won't deal with it  ... ... Ended up buying it and installing it myself. Not a hard job. I chose to unbolt the bed from the frame and using a ratchet strap between the front tie-downs, used a portable engine hoist (cherry picker), tilted the bed like a dump truck. VERY EASY ! :D Just be sure to leave the back two bolts in the holes... . very loose... .
