Hello,

I'm having problems with my fuel gauge whenever my truck is parked. The problem I'm having is, when in park or stoped the gauge goes to empty but while driving it functions normal. Has anyone ever had this trouble before?

Thanks

Wow! $65 dollars an hour at the dealer "thats crazy". Its at their disposel to say it took 10 hrs if they want. Unless, they can plug it into the diagnosis machine and find it; maybe then it would worth it. I guess I'll have to live with it unless any of you guys have any suggestions :( .

Not Sure But They way it is now is better than if it was M/T while driving and full while parked.

MAybe the float is screwed up ???

Good Luck

DM

The float and rea-stat in the tank are known to go bad on these trucks, I have put three of them in my truck. Do a search on this site and you will find a great repair for yours. It is simple but you have to get the unit out of the tank, usually means dropping the tank down. The Dealer is not your best bet on this.

fuel guage trouble

I had trouble with my fuel gauge reading. Bought a new sending unit/float from my local 5 star. Waited till the tank was almost dry then pulled it myself. All i can say is wow, what a lot of crap in there for no apparent reason. Clean the screen in there while it's apart and good to go. :-{} Until next time

Thanks guys! I'm seeing that all my issues maybe in the tank by the sound of things. I was hoping it wasn't going to have to come to that, but if it means fixing it it worth it.

Thanks

fuel sender

Dropping the tank is no big deal, the hardest part is getting the fuel lines disconnected, not much space for you hand. Mine was stopping at 1/4 full, and went empty on me, I had to learn to bleed the injectors in the middle of Baja! The specified ohm values for the 01 truck are incorrect in the shop manual. I got a new sender and it had the same values as my old one, way off from book, then ordered another one, which was the same again. So I cleaned everything, returned the new senders, put in my old one and added another fuel sender and guage as a backup. Has worked fine for over a year now. Do clean the screen on the bottom of the sender/pickup bucket. While you have the tank out clean the tank. Good luck!

If you remember, how expensive was it after it was all said and done? Is the screen, pickup, and sender all one unit or are they individual parts?

Thanks

As I remember, a new sender/float unit was about $45. The screen is on the bottom of the "bucket" unit that holds the pick up screen, lines and sender with a spring loaded widgit. like i said, what a lot of crap for nothing, but try running without it. cheesey coily fuel lines check valves and all. My buddy just replaced his bucket. what a pia. Of course this is IMHO. your mileage may vary :-laf If you have'nt done so yet,get a haynes repair manual. priceless.

I had a problem with my 96 Dodge fuel gauge and my local dealer said they had replaced hundreds of them. Anyway they dropped my tank and discovered there wasn't a new gauge in stock so they put things back together and ordered one for me to be put in later. As soon as I got the truck back things were back to normal. Apparently the contact just needed to be cleaned or in this case reestablished. When the new gauge came in I told them I didn't need it. They insisted I still needed it replaced. I was sent a bill because their analisis said my gauge was bad. I wasn't going to pay the bill as it wasn't as they said, but they said fine they would just deduct their mechanic the pay he got for working on my truck. I think this is wrong so I paid it. I had the truck another 2 years and it still was working when I traded it off.

The first time mine went bad chrysler said I had to replace the whole assembly at a price of $250 I argued and they finally sold me just the float unit around $45. The last time I replaced it it didn't work and I had to mess with plug in at the top of the fuel tank, then it worked and has ever since.

While exploring this web site i found a permenate fix for the float and you don't even have to buy a new one it was a matter of installing a spring on the back of the shaft on the float if I recall. Do a search it will be worth your time.
